Author coaches are professionals that help authors through the writing process. Being an author is often a very solitary career. But it doesn't have to be. Author coaches help with writer's block, providing advice on how to publish, where to find editors, cover artists, marketing, etc. They are often the first biggest fan an author has on their journey to becoming a published author. When you hire an author coach, you are hiring an advocate to make your book the best it can be.
When do you need to hire a coach? As soon as you start writing or earlier! You can waste time searching the internet on what to do to publish your book, or you can use that time to allow a professional coach assist you with the writing, publishing and marketing processes.
Your author coach will help put you in contact with the right people, especially if they are not an expert with the publishing or marketing pieces. When it's time to find an editor, cover artist, formatter, distributor, ISBN, copyright, marketer, etc. your author coach should be able to recommend options.
Your author coach may not be an editor; however, they should be able to help you brainstorm and help with flow of your book. A good author coach should be able to brainstorm through writer's block, help you set realistic goals, and be your accountability partner to keep you on track with your goals.
Your author coach should be able to help you with your business plan – especially if you are using your book to enhance your role as an author and your career. Being an author does not have to be a creative hobby. It can become a business.
Most importantly, your author coach should have knowledge about writing but it is helpful if they have knowledge in your field of expertise. If they are not an expert, they should be willing to research that area of expertise in order to ensure that you are on track with content. If they are not an expert, make sure that you also have someone who can assist with technical content.
Lastly, remember the author coach is your advocate. Your author coach is on your side. They are rooting for you to be a success and are one of your first fans. Hire someone you can trust and feel will be just as committed to your book as you are.
