The Road to AUTHORity®: Publishing a Book Is Only Part of the Journey
When someone comes to Enhanced DNA Publishing with a book idea, one of the first things I
want them to understand is that becoming a published author is about much more than getting a book on Amazon.
There is a journey between having something to say and becoming an author who understands how to use a book to make an impact.
Years ago, I gave that journey a name: Road to AUTHORity®.
I intentionally emphasize AUTHOR in AUTHORity because I believe authorship can be a
powerful way to establish credibility, share expertise, tell important stories, build a brand, create opportunities, and leave a legacy.
But AUTHORity does not happen simply because you publish a book.
It has to be developed.

What Is the Road to AUTHORity®?
Road to AUTHORity® is the methodology we use at Enhanced DNA Publishing to help authors think beyond the finished book.
The journey begins long before someone uploads a manuscript to a publishing platform, and it continues long after the book is released.
I have organized that journey around five areas.

1. Define Your AUTHORity
Before deciding what to write or how to publish, start by defining your AUTHORity.
Your AUTHORity is the intersection of what you know, what you have experienced, what you care about, and the value you can offer to others. It may come from professional expertise, lived experience, specialized knowledge, a personal journey, or a combination of these.
At this stage, you are asking bigger questions than “What book should I write?”
What do I know? What have I learned? What am I passionate about? What experiences have shaped my perspective? Where can my knowledge or story provide value to someone else?
Those answers help identify the expertise, experience, or perspective that can become the foundation for your book.
Before you develop the book, define the AUTHORity behind it.

2. Identify Your Author DNA
Once you understand the AUTHORity behind your book, the next step is understanding who you are and where you are in your author journey.
Why are you writing this book? What are your goals as an author? What does success look like to you?
The answers influence almost everything that follows, including the book you write, the audience you want to reach, the publishing decisions you make, and how you ultimately market and leverage your book.
Your starting point matters too.
Are you carrying an idea? Have you started writing? Do you have a completed manuscript? Are you already published but unsure what to do next?
There is no single starting point and no single definition of author success. Understanding your goals, motivations, and current status gives you a baseline for determining what you need next.
The Enhanced DNA Publishing Author DNA Assessment can help you identify that starting point and better understand where you are on your publishing journey.

3. Follow a Blueprint
This is where the publishing process becomes very real.
Writing and manuscript development. Editing. Book design. ISBNs. Copyright. Metadata. Distribution. Pricing. Publishing platforms. Production specifications. Marketing.
There are a lot of decisions between having a book idea and putting a professionally published book into the hands of readers.
Self-publishing has made publishing more accessible than ever, but accessibility does not eliminate the need to understand the process.
Authors don't need to become publishing professionals. They do need a reliable blueprint that helps them understand what needs to happen, when it needs to happen, and what decisions they will need to make along the way.
Ask yourself:
"Do I have a process for writing, publishing, and marketing my book? Do I understand the steps and their sequence? Do I have the tools, resources, and trusted guidance I need to publish professionally?"
A blueprint gives you a path to follow so you can move forward with greater clarity and make informed decisions throughout the publishing journey.

4. Identify and Engage Your Target Audience
One of the most important questions an author can
answer is:
Who is this book for?
“Everyone” is rarely the answer. A book written for everyone can easily become a book that no one recognizes as being specifically for them.
Identify Your Audience
Start by identifying the people most likely to benefit from your expertise, experience, message, or story.
Who needs what you have to share? What challenges are they facing? What questions are they asking? What are they trying to learn, accomplish, change, or understand?
Don't simply assume you know. Do the research.
Understanding your audience influences your book's content and positioning, how you describe and market it, and even the opportunities you pursue after publication.
But identifying your audience is only the first part.
Engage Your Audience
Once you know who you want to reach, determine where they are and how you can connect with them.
Where do they spend time online? What groups, associations, professional or community organizations, conferences, podcasts, newsletters, and networks bring them together?
Then begin engaging.
Don't wait until publication day to suddenly ask people to buy your book. Listen. Learn. Contribute. Share your expertise. Build relationships. Become part of the communities and conversations that matter to your audience.
Ideally, this work begins before your book is published.
You aren't simply building a list of potential book buyers. You are building relationships with people who recognize the relevance of your expertise, message, and work.
Publishing makes your book available. Identifying the right audience makes it relevant. Engaging that audience helps turn relevance into reach and impact.

5. Stay Connected. Keep Growing.
Publication day is a milestone. It is not the finish line.
Authors need relationships within the author and publishing communities, but they also need to remain connected to the communities surrounding their areas of expertise, interests, businesses, or causes.
Continue learning. Continue sharing. Continue building relationships. Continue finding ways to use your book and your expertise to provide value.
Your book may lead to conversations, speaking opportunities, workshops, partnerships, new clients, additional books, or opportunities you haven't even considered yet.
AUTHORity isn't established by publishing a book and then stepping away. It grows as you continue to demonstrate what you know, contribute to the communities you serve, and build upon the platform your book helped create.
Publication gives you a book. What you do with it can continue building your AUTHORity long after launch day.
There Is More Than One Way to Travel the Road

Authors need different levels of support.
Some want to learn how to self-publish while maintaining control of the process themselves. For those authors, we created the Enhanced DNA Publishing Academy®, an educational platform with publishing resources, tools, and guidance.
Others want a publishing partner to help guide and manage the process. They travel the same Road to AUTHORity® through the publishing services and packages offered by Enhanced DNA Publishing.
The destination isn't determined by which option you choose.
The important thing is understanding where you are, where you want your book to take you, and what you need to get there.
Your Book Is Part of Something Bigger
After working with authors through many different types of books and publishing journeys, one thing has become increasingly clear to me:
A book can be a product, but it can also be a platform.
It can establish credibility. Open doors to speaking opportunities. Strengthen a business or professional brand. Educate a community. Start conversations. Preserve experiences and wisdom. And become part of a legacy that outlives the author.
That is why our work at Enhanced DNA Publishing has never been solely about producing books.
We help authors develop their ideas, nurture their stories and expertise, and achieve the goals they have defined for themselves.
And somewhere along that journey, something changes.
The person who once said, "I've been thinking about writing a book,” can begin saying:
“I am an author.”
But even that isn't the end.
It's another step on the Road to AUTHORity®.
