DESIGNING YOUR LIFE TO BE AN EVERYDAY LEADER
Melahni Qualls Ake
Leadership is Influence, Nothing More, Nothing Less, as my mentor, John C. Maxwell has taught me. As I reflect back over my life, I realize, he is right. If you can understand how to develop yourself as a leader, you will be on your way to understanding how to impact and influence others. This path is not a complicated one. The great thing is that you have total control over the process because it starts with you.
What I am continuing to learn is this, when you embrace the concepts of leadership and influence and begin to design your life around it that this can literally increase your impact in all facets of your life in these three ways.
What you believe about yourself and your abilities will come true
What you allow yourself to experience will teach you amazing life lessons
What you stay passionate about will help you stay connected to your purpose and allow you to add value to the world.
In this chapter, I am excited to share with you lessons from my life that I believe will make an impact in yours. I hope these lessons can help you design a life of success and significance on your journey.
In July of 2016, I was at a turning point in my life and career. I was in a position of influence with a great medical device company that was leading the industry in their market. I had just facilitated eight weeks of International Sales Training in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK. This was only my second time ever to travel internationally much less design a sales training program for 3 different countries. I was designing and delivering sales training courses that I and two other team members would facilitate in the Netherlands and Germany following up with an industry conference in Vienna, Austria. This assignment would allow me to be in Europe for four weeks at the most beautiful time of the year. Being away from home for this extended period of time was a big commitment. Although I was going to be in unfamiliar surroundings, with people that did not speak English as a first language, I knew that I was going to make an impact.
You see, I have always had the determined mindset to create opportunities and design programs that add value to people in everything that I do. It is simply one of my non-negotiables in my life. When you choose to believe in yourself and set your own standards, you create the confidence you need to overcome any obstacles. You design your life on your own terms.
